St Mary’s Cathedral College Sydney has earned recognition in The Educator’s 5-Star Innovative Schools 2024 awards.
The co-educational K–12 school, situated in the heart of Sydney’s CBD, has transformed its educational model to better prepare students for a rapidly evolving world.
Under the leadership of Principal Kerrie McDiarmid, the College has adopted an approach that blends critical thinking, student efficacy, and real-world experiences, ensuring that students are equipped to thrive both academically and personally.
One of the key philosophies that guides St Mary’s is the belief in student efficacy – the idea that how students perceive themselves and their futures significantly influences their success.
This philosophy is embedded across all areas of the curriculum, with a particular focus on empowering students to take ownership of their learning.
As Principal Kerrie McDiarmid explains, “It is imperative to expose students to experiences and discussions that allow them to make better choices, take more ownership, and feel a greater sense of engagement with their learning.”
The College’s innovative Phronesis Program is a perfect example of how St Mary’s is shaping well-rounded individuals.
The program combines character education, wellbeing, spirituality, and academics to ensure that students not only excel in the classroom but also develop the emotional and ethical intelligence necessary for navigating life’s challenges. This approach fosters student growth, preparing them for future success in an ever-changing world.
St Mary’s also makes the most of its unique location by using the city as an extended classroom.
Through partnerships with cultural institutions like the Australian Museum and the Art Gallery of NSW, as well as industry leaders such as HEX and Sydney FC, the College connects students with real-world experiences.
These partnerships provide students with professional mentorship, exposure to diverse industries, and a deeper understanding of the world beyond the classroom.
“By linking in-class learning with opportunities in the wider community, we increase student engagement and help them make informed choices about their futures,” Principal McDiarmid said.
A standout initiative at St Mary’s is its student parliament, inaugurated by alumnus and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
This initiative gives students the opportunity to engage in debates, contribute to school policy, and develop leadership and civic responsibility skills. Recent debates have included important topics like the role of artificial intelligence in education, allowing students to have a direct influence on the College’s AI policy.
As St Mary’s Cathedral College looks to the future, the focus remains on continuing to expand its partnerships and enriching the educational experience for its students.
Through its commitment to student efficacy, hands-on learning, and character development, St Mary’s is leading the way in preparing students to face future challenges with confidence and purpose.
