PM surprises students to launch College Parliament

21 February 2024 – Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese visited his former school, St Mary’s Cathedral College, as he fittingly celebrated the official launch of the first Student Parliament.

Overwhelmed with excitement the students were inspired by the words of their Prime Minister who addressed not only his experience of his time at St Mary’s, but also explained “the great privilege of being chosen to serve, as it’s the opportunity to make a positive difference for others – and to make this great school an even better place.”

The Prime Minister said “You do that by being true to yourself, by holding strong to your values. And you do it by being willing to listen and learn, because no-one comes to these jobs with all the answers to every question.”

College Parliament representative and prefect, Charlie Abbey said one of the key messages from today, ‘was to always listen and make sure that everyone’s voice is heard. No one is left behind, and no one is held back from aspiring to make the most of their opportunities.”

“His visit today was a pleasant surprise. I had admiration for not just an old boy, but a man that, against the odds, achieved his goal, and is committed to making the nation a better place.”

The excitement spilled over into hi-fives and cheers as he departed the College Hall, following the largest student selfie ever.

The Executive DIrector Sydney Catholic Schools, Mr Tony Farley said, ‘Prime Minister you are well loved at this school, and you are always welcome. What an inspiration this visit is for the students of your former school.”

“We continue to recognise the importance of student voice, choice and agency. The College community were fortunate to have with us today an individual who drew upon the values St Mary’s instilled, and has created a platform for change that will have a lasting legacy,” concluded Principal, Kerrie McDiarmid – St Mary’s Cathedral College Sydney.
